Jesus Then And Now

This section provides some interesting information and compares scriptures, of Jesus then and now, when attempting to prove who Jesus is (or who he is not). One thing appears to be consistent with the scriptural presentation of Jesus; whoever Jesus was on Earth he is certainly the same person in Heaven with God today.

Jesus Christ The Same Yesterday,
Today and Forever

Hebrews 13:8)

Jesus

On Earth & In Heaven

Jesus Was:

(While On Earth)

Jesus Is:

(While In Heaven)

Jesus Was a Man(Mark 15:39John 8:40Acts 2:22Romans 5:15) Jesus Is a Man(1 Timothy 2:5Acts 17:30-31)

(Acts 17:29-31) Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31 Because he [God] hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man [Jesus] whom he [God] hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him [Jesus] from the dead.

Jesus Was “the Son Of Man”(Matthew 8:209:616:1327Mark 10:3314:62) Jesus Is “the Son Of Man”(Acts 7:55-56Revelation 1:1314:14)

Jesus Was “the Son of God”(Hebrews 1:5) “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?”

(Matthew 16:16) “And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”

(Matthew 8:2914:3327:42-4354Luke 1:353:224:418:28John 1:341:493:186:6910:3611:2720:31Acts 8:379:20Romans 1:42 Corinthians 1:19Galatians 2:20Ephesians 4:13)

Jesus Is “the Son of God”(Revelation 2:18) “And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God,who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass”
Jesus’ Father Was God(Hebrews 1:5) “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?”

(Mark 16:16) “And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”

(2 Corinthians 11:31Ephesians 1:3173:141 Peter 1:32 John 1:3)

Jesus’ Father Is God(John 20:17) “Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.”

(Revelation 3:5) “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”

(Revelation 3:12) “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my Godwhich is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name”

(Revelation 3:21) “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.”

Jesus Was The Lamb Of God(John 1:2936) Jesus Is The Lamb Of God(Revelation 5:1212:10-1113:821:1422-2322:13)

Jesus’ Purpose Was:(Luke 9:20-22) “He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. 21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no manthat thing; 22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day

(John 3:17) “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

(John 11:25-27) “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? 27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.”

(John 17:1-3) “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee (you) the only true God, andJesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

(John 20:31) “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (not God); and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

(1 John 5:10-13) “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

(Romans 10:9-11) “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”

Jesus’ Purpose Is:(Hebrews 4:14) “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.”

(Hebrews 9:24) “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which arethe figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:”

(Romans 8:34) “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.”

(Hebrews 7:25) “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”

(Revelation 20:6) “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him [Christ] a thousand years.”

(Revelation 5:4-7) “And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. 5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. 6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. 7 And he [Jesus] came and took the book out of the right hand of him [God] that sat upon the throne.”

(1 Corinthians 15:24-28 (NLT)) “After that the end will come, when he [Jesus] will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having destroyed every ruler and authority and power. 25 For Christ must reign until he humbles all his enemies beneath his feet. 26 And the last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For the Scriptures say, “God has put all things under his authority.” (Of course, when it says “all things are under his authority,” that does not include God himself, who gave Christ his authority.) 28 Then, when all things are under his authority, the Son will put himself under God’s authority, so that God, who gave his Son authority over all things, will be utterly supreme over everything everywhere.”

Jesus Is at the “Right Hand” of GodMost scriptures reflect Jesus as standing or sat down at the right hand of God. It is irrelevant whether the “right hand” of God is stated as being figurative or literal, either way it denotes Jesus at a position to someone other than himself.

(Acts 7:55-56Romans 8:34Ephesians 1:20Colossians 3:1Hebrews 1:3Hebrews 8:1Hebrews 10:12Hebrews 12:21 Peter 3:22)

60 of 100: Jesus was a MAN attested/approved by God (YaHWeH) with mighty works and wonders and signs that God (YaHWeH) DID through him and not ‘The gods are come down’

Jesus was a MAN attested/approved by God

Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is one.

During a visit to the Vatican in 2016, the Audio tour #25 had this phrase:

Jesus Christ who works miracles to confirm his divinity

20160528_130838-2

Often Jesus’ extraordinary miracles is seen as sign of his divinity by trinitarians.

Response:
Jesus himself said:
Joh 14:12  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
According to Jesus, any other human who believes can not only do the miracles he did, but he can do even greater miracles. So Jesus does not encourage the Trinitarian’s argument for his divinity based on his miracles.
In fact, according to Peter, Jesus miracles showed him that Jesus was a MAN who was attested by God (YaHWeh) and not that Jesus was divine:

Act 2:22  “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth,

Regarding Immanuel

Let’s be real, Matthew 1:23 is the only place in the NT where Immanuel is used by anyone in reference to Jesus, that is a fact. In all of the Preaching Luke recorded in Acts, and all of the Epistles written to the church, Isaiah 7:14 is never used.

In Matthew, the “meaning” of Immanuel is given – God with us. It actually doesn’t say Jesus is Immanuel or Jesus is God with us, it just quotes Isaiah 7:14 and relates it to the birth of Christ. WE (speaking as a Oneness or Trinitarian- yes Trini’s use the same verse) “interpret” that to mean Jesus is Immanuel, even call him by that name (no one else ever did) and proudly say, “Jesus is God with us.”

However, I believe it’s because we are ignorant of a few things.

1) where does Matthew get the interpretation of Immanuel? Most have no idea. He got it from Isaiah 8:10 – “Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God [is] with us.” Did you see it?

“for God [is] with us” in the Hebrew, עִמָּ֖נוּ אֵֽל
That’s where the interpretation is derived from. The context of the phrase
“God is with us” is not in a locational sense, but rather in the sense that God is with or FOR us, they have the favor of God. You see Jesus was “the sign” that God was with them. Just as Isaiah 7:11-14 is talking about. A virgin would conceive and bring forth a child – this is the sign of Immanuel- God is with us.

Not only that, but we have two verses of scripture that shows that they (the early church) didn’t hold that mis-understanding that Jesus is God with us. Which leads us to point #2

2) Luke 7:11-15, Jesus raised a young man from the dead. This is what happen after that…

Luke 7:16 (KJV) 16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

God had “visited them,” not physically, but rather this “Great Prophet” that had been risen up (referring to Jesus), was letting them know that God was with them.

The other scripture is even clearer…..

Peter, while preaching to the Gentiles, made this statement….

Acts 10:38 (KJV) 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Brethren, Peter would not have preached that if he believed Jesus was God with us.
[see the addendum at the bottom of this post]

Regarding worship of Jesus

Concerning worship of Jesus, we are again ignorant of things that would help us understand who they believed Jesus was and why they worshiped him.

We were taught that Jesus is worshipped because he was God. That means that the people worshiping him believed he was God! Ok, let’s dig into that.

1) here are the times Jesus was worshipped (I believe I’ve got them all listed)

  • Matthew 2:2,11, 8:2, 9:18, 14:33, 15:25, 18:26, 20:20 28:9&17
  • Mark 5:6, 15:19
  • Luke 24:52
  • John 9:38

Now, let’s look at each one to see if it’s clear as to rather or not they were worshipping Jesus as God, or……

Matthew:
2:2 & 2:11 – King
8:2 – Lord
9:18 – doesn’t say
14:33 – Son of God
15:25 – Lord
18:26 – Lord
20:20 – doesn’t say
28:9 & 28:17 – doesn’t say

Mark:
5:6-7 – Son of God most High
15:18-19 – King (mocking him)

Luke:
24:52 – doesn’t say

John
9:35-38 – Son of God/Lord

So, what can we conclude? Did they ever Call him God? When they called him Lord, were they calling him God?

No, you see it all lines up perfectly.

King, Lord, Son of God, these were who they knew Jesus to be.

  • Once you understand that Kings were called Lord in the OT
    (1 Samuel 24:8, 2 Samuel 18:31,  Chapter 19 ( whole chapter), 24:3, 1 Kings Ch.1
  • and worshipped [obeisance, reverence – same word]
    (2 Samuel 1:2, 2 Samuel 9:6, 1 Chronicles 29:20),
  • and that the Christ, who is Son of David (Matthew 22:42, Mark 12:35) would be called the Son of God (2 Samuel 7:14, 1 Chronicles 17:13),
  • then you can understand why they worshiped Jesus.

They that believed on him, believed he was the Christ, the Son of God.

One last note…..

If they had be worshipping Jesus as God, they would have all been killed. Not only would they have been charged with breaking the first commandment, but if Jesus was accused of BLASPHEMY for supposedly saying he was God (it was an accusation, he didn’t say that, plus he clarified what he said John 10:34-36), then surely it would have been blasphemy to call or worship Jesus as God.

My point simply being that we had been victims of mis-understanding. I was. … I [now] realize we are simply believing and teaching a combination of what we have heard and read throughout our lives. However, shall we continue to walk in the darkness of ignorance? Will we submit ourselves to the scriptures, and what they clearly teach or will we continue to view what is written through the lens of them who introduced us to all of this?

Humbly submitted, your brother in Christ Jesus, the Son of God.

ADDENDUM: Regarding Immanuel

Immanuel

The goal of this post is to show the symbology of the ‘Immanuel’ name in the original context of the prophecy and that it does not mean God incarnated.

Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it. (Isa 7:1)

When news reached the royal palace that Syria had joined forces with Israel, King Ahaz and everyone in Judah were so terrified that they shook like trees in a windstorm.

The sign of Immanuel was that God would be with Judah against Syria and Israel. The goal of the prophecy was to trust God – i.e. To tell Ahaz to stop worrying.

The assurance Ahaz and his officials received through the prophet Isaiah was:
Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: behold, the young woman shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isa 7:15 Even before the boy is old enough to know how to choose between right and wrong, he will eat yogurt and honey, and the countries of the two kings you fear will be destroyed.

The fulfilment against Syria:
Isa 8:3 Sometime later, my wife and I had a son, and the LORD said,
“Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.
Isa 8:4 Because before he can say ‘Mommy’ or ‘Daddy’, the king of Assyria will attack and take everything of value from Damascus and Samaria.”

As Jesus was the real name of the Christ, so is Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz the real name of Isaiah’s son. But Isaiah’s son was symbolically ‘Immanuel’ because God was with Judah protecting them against their enemies. The arrival of Jesus later on symbolised that God was again with the children of Abraham because he had raised Jesus as a saviour for them.

Interpreting ’Immanuel’ as incarnation of God is futile when we study the original context of the prophecy.
Isa 8:9 All of you foreign nations, go ahead and prepare for war, but you will be crushed.
Isa 8:10 Get together and make plans, but you will fail because GOD IS WITH US.

Clearly the name of this promised son would be JESUS, yet he would bear the name ‘Immanuel’ symbolically as he is never referred to as ‘Immanuel’ in the gospel narratives, epistles or Acts.

As can be seen in the original context of the prophecy, ’Immanuel’ does not imply incarnation, rather that Jesus would save his people from their sins (Mat 1:21). Jesus does not save Israel on account of his divinity but on account of his obedience.

Some excellent points by Gregory L Quick Jr.

2nd person of the Godhead? Who are the 1st and 3rd? I know what your answer is going to be but again these statements just like God-man, human and divine, God Incarnate…etc. are all man made and no prophet or apostle spoke like this. In fact, let me take a somewhat different approach…

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD.

– If the Apostles (who were all present) believed that Jesus was human and divine, God – man, God incarnate, 2nd person in the Godhead, he would’ve said that. But no he said what the Ethiopian eunuch said…

And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that JESUS CHRIST IS THE SON OF GOD.
Acts 8:37 KJV

– Again not all this other stuff that church have declared Jesus to be. Let’s read…

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona:

– Brothers and sisters, please notice Jesus didn’t correct Peter by saying what we say

NO PETER YOU’RE ONLY SEEING THE FLESH SIDE OF ME BUT YOU’RE MISSING THE GOD SIDE, NO PETER I’M THE 2ND PERSON IN THE GODHEAD, NO PETER I’M GOD INCARNATE…ETC.

– Modern day church speaks like that. But Jesus said Peter was blessed and closed the case by letting Peter know that who he says Jesus is is the right revelation FROM THE FATHER. Not from the 2nd side of his dual nature. But God gave him the right revelation! And upon that RIGHT faith is how Jesus will build his church.

Matthew 16:15‭-‬18 KJV
15
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Now let’s compare this revelation with what Paul said to Timothy. One revelation cannot contradict the other my brothers and sisters.

1 Timothy 3:16 KJV
And without controversy GREAT IS THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS:

The mystery is not God becoming a man. This teaching completely contradicts the revelation (mystery revealed) to Peter. The mystery Paul is speaking of is OUR ABILITY TO LIVE GODLY through the spirit, which Jesus did as our perfect example.
Acts 10:36-38 tells us Jesus did receive the Holy Ghost and that God was WITH him. Not God was him. Lets read…

  • God was manifest in the flesh, – how? By becoming a man? No.
But by filling that man with the holy ghost and that man denying his own will and submitting his will to the father showing us that we can do it too. THAT’S THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS!
  • justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
  • There’s no way anyone can tell me that the Apostles taught that God was justified in the spirit. Jesus was justified in the spirit. Jesus was seen of angels. Jesus was preached…Jesus was believed on…Jesus was received up…

Again, if the mystery that Paul is revealing to Timothy is that God became a man, then that revelation completely contradicts Peter’s revelation which Jesus said was right, just the way Peter said it. No more. No less.

Regarding John 14:9, 20:28

Then it also must of contradicts what Jesus said unto Philip, when you have seen me you have seen the Father,

  • You actually substantiate the point my brother. Jesus didn’t say when you see me you see a dual nature, human and divine, God incarnate…etc. He said you see the Father and explains what he meant (verse 10) when he said it so we don’t have to assume what he meant or read our thoughts into his words. You and I both know it was prophesied that the Father would perform many works in Christ (i.e.  verse 10 he doeth the works) but none say he would be Christ. … So he was referring to the works and not his nature.
    John 5:36, John 10:24-38

But also by Thomas, when Jesus showed Thomas by asking him to put his finger into his side and the nail holes in his hand Thomas didn’t reply but just this way,
He replied (MY LORD ) AND MY GOD) NOW HERE WE DON’T FIND JESUS SAYING NO SIR, THOMAS YOU’RE WRONG FOR CALLING ME LORD AND GOD, as a matter of fact he didn’t say to Thomas your wrong now did he?

  • No he didn’t correct Thomas because Thomas had it right. Just like when he was there when Peter had it right along with the rest. My Lord “the man Jesus Christ” and my God “the Father in the man Jesus Christ”. No contradiction or need for correction. Jesus confirms this with his NON BELIEVERS in John 8. Lets read…And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I AM NOT ALONE, but I and the Father that sent me.

See? No dual nature. No God incarnate but Jesus plainly states I AM NOT BY MYSELF. There’s someone else here with me. Who is that Jesus?
“The Father that sent me”. Not the Father who is me. Then he refers to the law that states…

It is also written in your law, that THE TESTIMONY OF TWO MEN is true.

Not the testimony of a dual nature but the testimony of TWO. One plus one.

  • Jesus, please tell us who these TWO witnesses are when we see you.
I AM ONE that bear witness of myself, AND THE FATHER that sent me beareth witness of me.
    John 8:16‭-‬18 KJV

Regarding Philippians 2

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

  • Jesus didn’t have to rob God for his equality with God. God gave him his authority and the scripture explains that it’s understood that all things would be subject to Christ EXCEPT GOD. (1 Corinthians 15:27-28) This is not idolatry. We don’t worship Christ as God because he’s not God nor is he a god.
He’s been highly exalted BY GOD as our Lord. It’s in your bible too my brother.
    Lets read…

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

  • and guess who gets the glory?

to the glory of God the Father.

    Philippians 2:6‭, ‬9‭-‬11 KJV

Regarding Ephesians 4:4-6

There is ONE body (the church), and one Spirit (the Holy Ghost), even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord (Jesus), one faith (the doctrine of Christ), one baptism (in Jesus name), ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
(See God is not Jesus and Jesus is not God. God is the Father of all including Jesus)
