“They wanted to kill Jesus because he declared he was God.”

“They wanted to kill Jesus because he declared he was God.”

John 5:17-18, 8:58-59, 10:30-33

In the preceding scriptures, the Jews expressed their desire to kill Jesus because it appeared as if he was saying “I am God,” or so they said. On one account they charged him of BLASPHEMY (a very serious charge) “because You, who are a man, declare Yourself to be God.” (Jn 10:33 Berean Study Bible)

Well, there you have it. Jesus had declared himself to be God, and therefore had committed a grievous offense, worthy of death……..
So why wasn’t that the charge brought forth against him when they crucified him? Have you ever considered that?

If they had in fact believed that Jesus, being a man, had truly made the claim that he was God, how come they “sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death?”
(Matt 26:59). Surely they needed only to say, “he blasphemed and said he was God,” but they didn’t….why?

I pray you are willing to consider this…..

They didn’t bring up that accusation because they never really considered it to be the case. You see, Jesus hadn’t actually “declared” himself to be God (Jn 10:33), they were just falsely accusing him of doing so.

So while many have believed the opening passages to be proof that Jesus himself had claimed to be God, in actuality, that was far from the case. The Jews had simply lied and said things that they themselves didn’t even believe were credible charges against him.

Who had Jesus been telling them he was all along?

The answer is simple…..

John 4:25-26 (YLT)
The woman saith to him, ‘I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;’ Jesus saith to her, ‘I am he, who am speaking to thee.’

John 4:40-42
and many more did believe because of his word, and said to the woman — ‘No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world — the Christ.’

And when Jesus was arrested, guess what it was that made the High Priest tear his robe and condemn Jesus to death…..

Mark 14:61-64
“……Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. (Dan 7:13-14) Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.”

Now, just one last thing…..

If you are still not convinced, ask yourself this question…. “If Jesus was claiming to be God, and consequently killed for that reason, CERTAINLY the Apostles and every Jewish disciple that ever confessed faith in Jesus the Christ would have been guilty of IDOLATRY and PUT TO DEATH, right?”

Just something to pray about…..

There are a plethora of witnesses throughout the Bible that all confess and declare the same thing, over and over again……

John 20:31
….these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

2 John 1:3
Grace be with you, mercy, [and] peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
